Todd DuBoef of Top Rank claims that Francis Ngannou has “earned” a potential fight with Tyson Fury.

One of the most amazing scenes of 2023 was when Ngannou, a boxer without much fanfare, defeated Fury.

In a 10-round non-title match, Ngannou, a former UFC heavyweight champion, was competing in his first professional boxing match against Fury.

After a shocking knockdown, Fury—who was still the WBC champion—came back to win a split decision in a bout that was far closer than anybody had anticipated.

Top Rank president DuBoef, who also co-promotes Fury, thinks Ngannou has a compelling case right now for a potential rematch.

“People had to think he had a chance because of his performance. We never believed he had a chance, and in that particular circumstance, I believe he did.

“I believe Tyson is sorry. He held himself responsible. He felt that night to be odd. “I took it lightly,” he remarked. I was solely responsible for that. did not assign blame, which was a positive.

“Ngannou outperformed everyone, creating the ideal circumstances for a rematch. With such an impressive performance, it’s only natural to desire and anticipate a second encounter.”

That will have to wait if it is to be made. On February 17, Fury will square off against Oleksandr Usyk, the heavyweight champion of the IBF, WBO, and WBO, in an undisputed championship bout.

DuBoef hinted that the rivalry would last two fights, but he wasn’t a huge admirer of rematches. Simply said, I believe it kind of removes the prize from the prizefight.

The usage of rematch provisions is a relatively new phenomena that has emerged during the past perhaps fifteen years. Although I’m not a huge fan of rematches, you have to realize that they do happen frequently these days in bouts.”

However, Fury vs. Usyk could be worthy of a rematch on merit.

“I think it’s a special moment in February when we get all the heavyweight titles together,” DuBoef stated.

“I believe we’re talking about two elite heavyweights who should deliver a fantastic show, and if the fight is that amazing, it deserves to happen again. It shouldn’t be decided upon until the outcome of the first bout is known.

“Let’s hope that they put on such a fantastic battle that it justifies a rematch.”
