Though they are getting closer to their all-time low in performance, the Detroit Pistons are still anticipated to be involved in trades before the NBA trade rumors deadline in February.

Pistons general manager Troy Weaver recently told the Detroit Free Press (via HoopsHype) that the team can “make a splash in the trade market and sees it as the logical next step.”

Detroit is now 2–27 on the season after losing 26 straight games. The squad needs just one more loss to tie the record for most straight losses in a single season. They need three more defeats to tie the NBA record held by the Philadelphia 76ers for the most straight losses in history, even multi-season runs.

“It’s difficult because everyone wants to win and despises losing,” Pistons player Cade Cunningham said to reporters. We also need to be grounded in reality. We can’t just keep saying the same things, hoping that the next one will come along. We’re just attempting to find out what kind of plan of action there has to be.”

The Pistons desperately need a seasoned voice, but it’s unclear what path they would take in the trade market. The Pistons’ record-breaking $78.5 million deal was signed by coach Monty Williams this offseason, but his words have been hollow as his youthful club continues to make the same mistakes.

Cunningham is one of the team’s more gifted players, but there are other clubs farther along in their reconstruction who may be interested in making a stealthy move to sign a promising young player.

Having said that, it’s difficult to see the Pistons taking any practical route to success right away. For this franchise, a victory and any kind of momentum would be enough of a “splash”. Changing a roster that is already ineffective might becoming similar to rearranging deck chairs.
