What Drills Should You Use During Basketball Practice?

We advise beginning practice with a vigorous warm-up, then dividing up the remaining time according to your team’s identity and what you think is crucial after focusing on skills for 20 to 60 minutes (dribbling, passing, footwork, finishing, and shooting). This will cover rebounding, exceptional circumstances (press break, BLOB plays, etc.), team offense, and team defense.

Thus, the format of your practice plan may resemble this:

  • Warm up (in the hallway before practice)
  • 45 minutes of basketball skill drills
  • 15 minutes of defense & rebounding drills
  • 15 minutes of team offense drills
  • 15 minutes reviewing special situations (inbounds plays and press break)
  • 30 minute scrimmage

Note: To improve skill development, team defense, and team attack sessions, we recommend using small-sided games. You might achieve it by switching between “small sided games” and “drills.” As an illustration, begin with partner pass and pivot drills, then go on to 3v2 passing games. Then carry on with the cycle, dribbling, defending, shooting, etc.

How to Run Basketball Drills the Right Way
