Johnson was a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins 13 times during his career as an NHL player in North America.

After stints with the American Hockey League’s Ontario Reign and Lehigh Valley Phantoms, he moved to the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) for the 2020–21 season.

Johnson’s inquiry was begun and postponed earlier this month.

The Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL), the highest league in the sport in the United Kingdom, declared that while it would not mandate neck guard use, it would “strongly encourage” officials and players to do so.

The English Ice Hockey Association, which is in charge of all ice hockey competitions in England outside of the Elite League, has previously declared that neck guards will be required starting in 2024.

The Panthers have called the occurrence a “freak accident”.
